Trendy Thursday: Greener than Green!!

May 27, 2010

Well my Husband is getting an iPhone – the nerve – so I’m seeing green this week.
Now personally, you will never see me in a bright green shirt, as that is generally not a good look for me with my coloring. I can pull off sage, but that’s about it! But I still love adding green to my look with accessories!!

1. Green outerwear:
Blazer
Paisley Poem Blazer by
J Crew is spring personified in a blazer! I love it! Or this Landmarks Jacket blazer from Anthropologie. How cute would this be with white capris or a jean skirt? This green trench coat is darling if you can pull off that color!
2. Green Accessories:
Ring
I love this
green cluster ring from Old Navy! So adorable! And the Global Girlfriend Brass Hoop Drop Earrings are a must have. And an awesome statement necklace is always a great way to add some color to your look. And let us not forget my favorite accessory… a great purse!!

3. Green Shoes.

How cute are these adorable green sandals?!! Or these heels? Or how about some BCBG Sage Pumps for only $80? I have a pair of lime green heels that are super fun to add a splash of color to an outfit. And I practically live in my lime green Privos. Ooooooh –green rain boots!!

Trendy Thursday: I’ve Got the Blues

May 21, 2010
Trendy Thursday got posted a little late this week…. more of a “Fashion Friday” if you will 🙂

This spring, my color of choice is blue. Dark blue, light blue, bright blue… I love all of it!!
Last spring, I bought everything in coral.
Last fall, plum.
What can I say… I have an obsessive personality.

1. The blue bag. I am just a little bit in love with this bag by Melie Bianco:
Pl751614-00vliv01
Seriously, you could fit a small child in this thing! The studs are so trendy, but they’re still subtle enough that the bag won’t be outdated next season. AND it has a polka dot lining *eep!* And I would be remiss not to point your attention to this little beauty. But, we could talk about purses all day. So lets move on.

2. Bright Blue. Don’t wimp out and go navy! Go bright – it is spring after all!! I’m loving this bright blue. Try it in a maxi dress like this one, or try it in a sweater or sleeveless shell paired with some white pants. This button down tunic would make a great layering piece. The navy/tourquoise combination looks great too – love this skirt from Shade!

3. What says “beach” more than a blue swimsuit? I love this tourquoise one-piece! No – I love this ruffled one-piece even more! Add this gorgeous floral print sarong and no one would ever know its from Old Navy. I also love this navy polkadot bikini from J Crew. And this shirred bandeau suit from Target is too cute.

4. Brighten up your comfies. Just add a little pop of color to your gray capris with a tank or a tunic.

At-otf-out18626odv01 This crane hoodie from Ibex is so adorable – great with a little yoga skirt or capris! And I love this funnel neck zip-up hoodie from Shade.

5. The blue dress. Head straight over to Shabby Apple. Do not pass go. They have several totally gorgeous, totally stylish, totally blue dresses. By the way, I’m so glad that the maxi dress is still around. I positively live in them during the summer! They’re so comfy and can be dressed down with a ponytail and flip flops or dressed up with some cute sandals and accessories. (How gorgeous is that necklace! And from Target!) Speaking of accessories…

5. Blue accessories!! I love this twisted seed bead necklace – and its only $12. I. LOVE. THIS! I’m about 99% sure I will be buying these Inverted Color Bangles from Forever 21. What a subtle way to add a splash of color!

Trendy Thursday: Swim Suit Cover Ups

April 29, 2010

Well, last week we talked about the swimsuit. So now its time to chat about the mom’s bestest friend, the cover up!
I love swim coverups so much that several of them have woven their way into my summer wardrobe. (Really, they were that cute!) A swim coverup is a great way to try something trendy that you might not normally try or to try a sundress that
might be just a smidge too young for you. When its just thrown over your swimsuit, you can pull just about anything off!
Here are my three favorite coverup looks:

  1. Going classic and sophisticated with a gauzy tunic like this one from Old Navy:On730460-00vliv01
    Athleta has
an adorable linen one. Or go for a more exotic look with a kimono style cover-up. Or go luxurious with a silk tunic!
  2. Going sleek and modern with a maxi dress. This tube dress from Old Navy is classic. I have this maxi dress from Target and I wore it constantly all summer – not even as a cover up! It became one of my go-to outfits for summer and I constantly got compliments on it.
The maxi dress is a prefect coverup –and feels so comfy to throw on after a long day at the beach. Personally, the tube top look is something I can only pull off as a coverup. Not a good look for me normally.
  3. Going cute and sporty with a little hoodie dress. Or this one from Old Navy. Or go cute and nautical with this hooded dress from Old Navy – or if you love just stripes in general, this envelope dress would also be a great coverup!

What’s your favorite beach coverup?

Trendy Thursday: Swim Suits

April 22, 2010

“Bathing Suit Season.” The phrase drives fear in the hearts of women everywhere. And its almost here.

*collective sigh*

Well, regardless of how ready we are, the swimsuits have hit the stores. And you know that we need to snatch them up now because if we wait to June all that we’ll find are XXS bottoms, XL tops and Halloween costumes.

So let us begin.

Gp706065-02vliv01The best swimsuit investment I ever made was buying a bunch of pieces from the same collection to mix and match. Mine is from Gap. I have a variety of pieces in black that I mix and match according to how skinny I feel, including the essential tankini top, essential halter bikini top, essential bikini bottom and swim skirt. I also have the essential one-piece halter suit.
I purchased them over about 3 years, both from the store and from the outlet, I didn’t pay full price for a single piece. I remember I picked up the one-piece at the outlet for about $12 last year. The skirt? $3. Awesome. Because they’re all from
Gap, the pieces are totally interchangeable.
I know it seems like a lot, but if you purchase classics like these over a year or two, you’ll be set for years!

Budget suits:

I’ve had good luck over the years with suits from Old Navy and Target.

I love this Navy Paisley tankini from Old Navy, if you’re looking to liven things up with patterns.

If your tummy is your problem area, I highly recommend a tankini with a swing top, like this from J Crew. I bought a similar tankini from Target for my post-baby summer and it was so comfy, was easy to nurse in and hid my postpartum tummy nicely.

Perhaps you’d like to swim in a diaper? (Can I get a WHAT??!!)

513IUEET+pL._AA260_I bought this dotted tankini for the summer. I wanted something strapless, so I wouldn’t have tan lines to worry about for my sister’s wedding this summer. And, while I always wear bikinis at the beach, I feel weird wearing a bikini to the little kiddie pool at the Y 🙂 So I almost always go with a tankini. I bought both pieces on sale, so for under $30, I got a super cute suit!

These Bandeau Shirred One-Pieces are adorable! And since they’re from Target, buy two! Ooo – it comes in a tankini! And polka dots! And this one is so cute – it looks like a dress! I love it!

Investment suits:
Unless you swim every single day, your swimsuit will probably last several years with proper care. So it might be worth investing in a really nice, classic suit that will last you awhile instead of buying a new suit every year.

Spanx has a line of swimwear now that not only is really cute, but slim you as well! I would get this Bandeau One Piece, since the ruffles would provide some interest in an area where I was not abundantly blessed:
PSPNX1-7158166t207x260
There are some really, really cute ones at
Anthropologie, if you want a more unique look (since is it me or does every other mom at the pool have the Lands End Tankini?). This Mariana one-piece is fabulous! The polka dot pattern is fun and the shape mimics the wrap dress with its draping ruffle, which looks great on so many body types. For a similar look without the ruffle and polka dots, try this suit from J Crew. Athleta has gorgeous swimsuits that will last for years. The Batik flower swim series is really pretty, but I think the Indian Swirl Bowback Tankini is my favorite!

Lands End is always a great bet as well. They also have a line of slimming suits (try the Carmela Slender Swimsuit – absolutely classic). I love their mix and match collection – the swim skirts have tummy control as well. The Faille Empire Tankini is my absolute favorite. If it came in my size, I would be all over this!

Trendy Thursday: Play Dress Up!

April 15, 2010

I have several events coming up this summer that are going to require a cute dress.
Darn.
Guess I need to go shopping! (Sometimes its rough being me 😉 Lets see what we can find.

1.
‘Precious Petal’ cotton dress from Mod Cloth. So cute for under $50. Seen in the current issue of People’s Style Watch!

2. This Beaded Irish Linen Sheath from Talbots is classically gorgeous. Great for highlighting your arms and legs and hiding everything else — while not looking like a circus tent. A difficult feat indeed.

3. My crush this season is this solid embossed beach dress from J Crew. And the strapless version (solid embossed Lorelei dress) is just as gorgeous. The soft dove color is too gorgeous for words.

4. I just love the bold, mod pattern in the Signature Floral Dress by Jones New York. (and its on sale for $70!)

I’m sorry. I have to interrupt this post to ponder how many stores are selling rompers. FOR ADULTS. even White House Black Market! Is this a joke?!?!? Please tell me this is a joke….

5. This
Ruffle-Front Faux Wrap dress by Merona at Target is so cute! Love the color… and the price.

6. Oh. Be still my heart. Chiffon Ruffle Front Dress in vintage plum at LOFT. Oh, and its on sale!!! If only it was in my size!!

7. This Embroidered Dot Ruffled Sheath Dress from Ann Taylor is so classic… but so trendy. I’m a huge fan of ‘little black dresses’ that aren’t black!

8. Of course, you can never go wrong with black (says the girl with approximately 25 black sweaters). The Rushing Ruffles Dress from Anthropologie is a gorgeously feminine version of the little black dress! Love it!

Sidebar: alternate post title was “How Many Dresses Can She Find With Ruffles”

9. For a more formal wedding, this JAX Split Neck Pointe Knit Dress from Nordstroms is perfect. Not too fancy, a modern print, and a flattering cut for almost every body.

10. I love the back of this Silk Halter Dress from Banana Republic. So pretty!

What events are you shopping for a dress for this summer? Weddings? BlogHer? Spill it!

Trendy Thursday: Kids Easter Fashion

March 26, 2010

Each and every year, I swear I won’t buy Easter clothing for my kids because 1) it almost always snows or is completely freezing, making the cute spring clothing completely inappropriate and 2) I always forget about SHOES to go with the cute dresses I picked out, so the girls end up wearing white dresses with their black or brown mary janes, which makes me twitch. But almost every year I cave and buy something because I just can’t resist the cuteness of spring dresses. And now that I have a boy, the sweater vests are calling my name! This year I can totally justify it, since we have so many events this summer that they will need to dress up for, so I’ve actually been looking around. So here are a few little gems I found for you:
417cz3-7DCL__AA260_

  1. This dress on the left is the Easter dress that both of my girls wore last year – they were so adorable! They’re still available at Target – for only $14! (They still fit them, actually, but let’s not let that stop us from shopping.)
  2. This plaid dress by Chaps is at Kohls for under $25. I love the colors – they turned a traditionally winter print into a bright spring one!
  3. Now I know that chocolate brown isn’t what you think of for spring, but this floral patterned dress by My Michelle is still so darling! (And this is a very similar version in spring colors)
  4. My middle daughter would positively live in this ballerina dress by Cherokee. And I wouldn’t mind if she wore it around the house with a price tag of $20.
  5. Both my girls would love this polka dot dress from Childrens Place. I would get it different colors, so that the girls were matching, but not the same.
  6. 0900631b818989d5M.tif Oh my heavens, do they make this in my size? The smocking! The ribbons! The embroidery!
  7. Okay. This pink nautical dress makes me feel like I’m in 1950. I love it!! (But my kids would totally not wear it 😉
  8. This gorgeous organza sleeveless dress with floral vine embroidery comes with a matching dress for a baby doll. They. Would. DIE!
  9. And – drumroll, please – This is the dress I bought for them. They had me at “pink” and “ruffles.” It is too cute! It even has a netted lining, so it looks all poofy and fancy.

17024834 And OH THE BOY CLOTHES!!

  1. I mean, honestly. Who can handle this cuteness?
  2. Three words: Argyle. Sweater. Vest.
  3. And a seersucker plaid blazer? Are they trying to make people spontaneously combust at the sight of the cuteness?
  4. I love this little blazer paired with distressed jeans. This is beyond cute. I need a new word. Ubercute.
  5. A suit? *faint*

Sorry. I have to go lie down after all this cuteness. Its just too much for my system. And I need some time to grieve the fact that there is probably NO WAY that my son will ever let me put any of these cute outfits on him, seeing as I can barely convince him to wear clothes at all. SOB!
