Jack Can Really Ring A Bell!

December 7, 2012
It’s that time of year! The holiday season is in full swing! Entertaining, baking, decorating, shopping…we love it all! And just as synonymous with the holidays as candy canes and Christmas carols, there is the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. I’m sure that on one of your trips to the shopping mall, you’ve seen a red kettle stationed outside the door. Hopefully you’ve been able to drop in some change or a few dollars to help those in need, given a smile to the frozen, red-nosed volunteer who is cheerfully ringing their bell and been on your merry way. But this year, we’ve all been given the chance to do just a little more!
Your local Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to man their red kettles during the 2012 campaign which kicked off the week before Thanksgiving and runs through December 24th. Now in its 122nd year, this campaign has an incredible, grassroots history. In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome — funding the project. He remembered his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England and at Stage Landing where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called “Simpson’s Pot” into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor. The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas. Today in the U.S., The Salvation Army assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods. Captain McFee’s kettle idea launched a tradition that has spread not only throughout the United States, but all across the world. Kettles are now used in such distant lands as Korea, Japan, Chile and many European countries. Everywhere, public contributions to Salvation Army kettles enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten.
When I heard about this opportunity, we were eager to volunteer. Not only to be a part of the rich history of such a worthy organization but two hours at the mall with my husband and toddler sounded like a great date night to me! From beginning to end, it was one of the easiest, most enjoyable volunteer experiences we’ve had.
Step 1: Call your local Salvation Army to sign up. The Salvation Army’s website (www.salvationarmyusa.org) can help you find the location closest to you. We called the West Chester Corps (610-696-8746) where Donna Copeland, Program Director, was happy to help assign us a shift. With four red kettle locations in Exton and two in West Chester, it was easy to find a date and time that worked with our schedule.
Step 2: Show up for your shift. We even received a phone call that morning to confirm our time slot. We arrived a few minutes before we were scheduled to begin, met the friendly volunteer working before us (who volunteers 12 hours a day, all 31 days of the campaign…now that’s dedication!) to hand off the bell, apron and candy canes.
Step 3: Ring the bell. We chose to work at the Exton Mall Food Court which was a very family-friendly place to be. Jack had so much fun entertaining the crowd as he rang the bell and danced around. And when it was toddler break-time, my husband and I took turns keeping watch of the kettle. The two hours went by in a flash. We worked the last slot of the day which made me a little nervous because we had to make sure the kettle was picked up by the staff before we could go home. But right on time, an official Salvation Army van pulled up and in swat team fashion, the staff members jumped out and quickly broke down our station and we were ready to head home.
And now for the question you’ve been wanting to ask the entire time you’ve been reading our blog (and the question almost every single person we met during our bell ringing experience asked us)…weren’t we cold?!?! Of course! It’s winter in PA! And we just happened to choose an evening shift over the Thanksgiving weekend where the high temperature that day was a balmy 40 degrees. But being outside for our short two hours made me think about the over half a million homeless people in the United States who are living in the cold this time of year. And why it’s so important to help organizations like the Salvation Army, especially during the holidays, who are providing things such as shelter, food and the basic needs that so many of us can easily take for granted. So just bundle up, keep a hot beverage of choice in hand and enjoy the warm and fuzzy feeling you’ll get knowing you’re helping provide comfort and hope to those in need.

When these arrived, I wasn’t sure what to make of them. But I quickly fell in love and they haven’t left my feet. These neoprene socks are water-proof, germ-resistant and skid-proof. If you travel (hanging around in hotels or airports), these are perfect to pop into a bag so you can walk around in comfort. Also great for those who frequent the gym – wear them during yoga or slip them on after a swim as you walk to the locker room.

Me? I wear them around the house. They keep off the chill, but so light I forget I’m wearing anything on my feet.
Nufoot footwear comes in multiple sizes and colors for men and women.

West Chester Old Fashioned Christmas Parade Presented by Mars Drinks

November 29, 2012

Every year for 34 yrs and going strong, West Chester Chamber of Commerce puts on a spectacular parade. This year the parade will be held tomorrow night, Friday, November 30, 2012 at 7:15pm. Filled with excitement for all ages and entertainment from local High Schools (Chester County and Delaware County), Colleges/Universities and businesses. “The parade was recently named by USA Today as one of the top ten places to experience the arrival of Santa Claus during the holiday season. With about 30,000 spectators tightly lining the 1 mile route, it makes you feel like you are on Main Street USA.” Besides the arrival of Santa, another attraction is the High School marching bands who have the opportunity to compete and win a portion of more than  $5,000. Who will win this year? Last year it was Downingtown High School, will they stay as the Honor Band or will they be replaced?

So, what does this parade mean to me? Family, fun and the Holidays! Every year for the past 4 years, my family (3 generations) meets at my sister and brother-in-law’s house in town and have dinner. Then, around 6:45pm we walk up to Gay Street to claim our spots to watch the parade, usually catching the last part of the Elf run. We decided to start going when one of my sisters and I started families and wanted to get the kids and families involved. We love to see all of the local entities involved, even our old High School and most importantly the arrival of Santa at the end. If we ever get cold, which is quite often, Mars Drinks offers FREE Hot Chocolate and other warm drinks to help warm you from the inside out. It is a fun-filled night for us all and this year is expected to be just a wonderful as years past! Bundle up, go early to get a parking spot and a parade spot (streets of the parade route close at 5pm) and prepare for a great night!!!

Ask Shelby: Holiday Commitment Overload

November 28, 2012

Here is November’s installment of “Ask Shelby” from Chester County’s own Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Shelby Riley.
Dear Shelby,

Between my parents, my sister and her family, my in-laws and my husband’s cousins who live an hour away, our holidays are filled with too much traveling, hosting and trying to make everyone else happy.  I would love to spend Christmas day at home with just my husband and kids, but I know it would kill my parents, as they expect to be invited for breakfast and gift opening, and my in-laws expect us for dinner at their house later that same day.  What can I do to satisfy everyone?

Signed, Overextended

Dear Overextended,

My one word answer is this: nothing.  You cannot satisfy everyone.  And I strongly suggest you stop trying.  I do believe there is a way to honor and respect your family relationships while still establishing some boundaries around your core family time.

The simplest and most dramatic way to accomplish this is to go away for the holidays.  Travel with your husband and kids to a destination far away where you can relax and enjoy the holiday together.  Plan to celebrate with various family members on a few select days before and/or after the trip.   People may respond with shock, hurt, jealousy, excitement or well wishes.  Let them have their reactions.  Those reactions belong to them and it is their responsibility to deal with their feelings, not yours.  As long as you are open to creating space for them in your schedule to celebrate, you don’t have to over-function to make sure they are totally pleased in every way.

You can also stay in town, designate Christmas as a day of no visits, and schedule celebrations on other days with family members.  Again, people may respond with shock, hurt, jealousy, excitement or well wishes. Let them have their reactions. Those reactions belong to them and it is their responsibility to deal with their feelings, not yours.

Some people decide that changing plans like yours on Christmas Day is just too hard and painful on everyone and the backlash isn’t worth it.  In a case like this, I recommend choosing a day in the holiday season to celebrate with just your husband and kids.  You may want to hang and fill stockings, light the tree, play Christmas music and exchange some presents three days early, so that opening your home on Christmas Day doesn’t feel so intrusive.  If you have young kids, and Santa is still an important factor, you may want to skip the stockings and presents and create some new traditions to share as a family, so that you get the time together you are yearning for.  This day is sacred and no other plans should trump yours, no matter whose party you might miss.  No one else is invited, not matter how much your mom pouts and says she wants to come along.   I am going to repeat myself here: People may respond with shock, hurt, jealousy, excitement or well wishes.  Let them have their reactions.  Those reactions belong to them and it is their responsibility to deal with their feelings, not yours.

I want to give you, and everyone else, permission to set boundaries.  It is okay to slow down, say no, and get creative.  Maybe you see your husband’s cousins in January, after the rush, to extend the fun even longer.  Maybe you host everyone at your house for one big dessert party, and stop running from house to house making sure everyone gets a piece of you.  If people can’t make the party, it’s okay to not see them until after the holidays are over.  Healthy people will express all kinds of feelings about your boundaries, but at the end of the day, they will accept and love you, even if they are disappointed.  Unhealthy people will express all kinds of feelings, too, but they may try to punish you or guilt you into changing your plans to accommodate their wishes.  Don’t accept that guilt.  It is an ugly gift that you should immediately place on the ground and walk away from.  No one needs to pick it up and deal with it—it can just sit there, unattended forever.

I wish you a wonderful, rich, and balanced holiday season, filled with many “No’s” because you intentionally decided what to say “Yes” to,

Shelby
