Limitless

March 31, 2011

If you know me, read my blog, are friends with me on Facebook, or follow me on Twitter, I am sure you know of my….hmmm lets say, “admiration” for Bradley Cooper.

So of course you can imagine I was extremely hyped to see Limitless!

Marked the opening date on my calendar, booked the sitter, and made sure my husband did not make any plans for us that night… that was until we realized the night before that the Pitt tournament game (we both went to Pitt) was on at the same time we bought the tickets for, ugh! Luckily we were able to go to the earlier showing and still watch the Pitt game at night, ahhh, crisis averted!

Some of you may remember when Limitless was filming in Philadelphia last summer (at the time held the same title as the book, “The Dark Fields”) It was so much fun seeing all the movie trucks and trailers, the Philadelphia street signs changed over to NY streets, and of course being on the constant look out for Bradley or Robert De Niro (for the two weeks he was here.)

Bradley Cooper plays Eddie Morra, a New York writer who has had a book deal for about 10 years, but has yet to write a single word of his novel. With the use of a wig, in the beginning of the film Bradley transforms to Eddie and looks disheveled and completely unkempt. We meet Eddie on the day his longtime girlfriend (played by Abbie Cornish) dumps him.

Minutes later Eddie bumps into his ex-brother-in-law who gives me a drug called NZT. A new pill that allows us to access 100% of our brain, as opposed to the 10 or 20% that we supposedly use. At this point Eddie has nothing else to lose, and so he takes the pill. It only takes minutes to kick in and all of a sudden Eddie is able to access everything he ever seen, touched, smelled, and heard since the womb. He can literally recall everything he has ever encountered.

The scene when Eddie arrives at his home and as the pill is setting in is just amazing. He is being harassed by his landlord’s wife and Director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) does an incredible job with effectively putting us in Eddie’s perspective while he experiences this revelation. I enjoyed this point-of-view moment much more then others. At time the camera is speeding through the streets of NY, almost enough to make you dizzy or feel sick. I did have to look away, but then again I do the same thing when I see any film in the IMAX theaters.

It’s an exhilarating ride for Eddie. He starts and finishes his book in four days, he learns to play instruments and he is able to learn entire languages after only hearing them briefly. The world is suddenly unlocked. Eddie is exceeding his wildest and most lavish dreams full of extravagant vacations, fast cars, and beautiful women.

Eddie starts trading on Wall Street and his thirst for power leads him to look for real investors, which is where Robert DeNiro comes in as Carl Van Loon. Robert DeNiro is excellent as always. He has a smaller part then I had anticipated, but he has a few great scenes as he does what DeNiro does best in one particular monologue, speaking to Bradley’s character.

I don’t want to give away too much, especially because I highly suggest you see it. Bradley Cooper is at his best, he truly delivers his best performance to date. The film truly lies on the shoulders of Bradley and his performance, and I think it was incredible for his first time in this role. I have said it for over six years now, he has this unbelievable star power and I hope he just keeps delivering performances as great as this one.

I know some people were disappointed with the lack of depth throughout the film or even the ending. I personally thought the ending was perfect, I loved it. The story could have been deeper but I wasn’t thinking of that while I was on the edge of my seat in the theater. It is an intense, entertaining ride and I can’t wait to see it again.

The Success of the Bachelor

March 18, 2011

I have had a love/hate relationship with The Bachelor/Bachelorette Franchise since Season 2 with Aaron Buerge (remember Gwen and Helene?? Funny, they both ended up auditioning for me later when I was casting for a Trading Spaces: Boys vs Girls host, and Helene ended up dating a friend of mine… but anyway…)

Every Monday night I find myself screaming at the television, shocked at the antics of someone from each season, annoyed with whoever is in the Bachelor or Bachelorette role, but every season I am glued to my TV every single Monday night (for TWO hours).

So what is it about this show that keeps us all tuning in?

For me, the one thing that gets me EVERY single season is that extended package of clips from the season they show at the end of every premiere episode. The show has about half my attention the first episode and then that last 5 min package gets me hooked! It’s the producing and the editing every season, it follows the same exact format but somehow ties us all in. Somehow the producers are able to get a Bachelor or Bachelorette who can come off sincere about wanting to “find the one” and they find 25-30 “contestants” who are interested in that one person.

I also think the Bachelor franchise hits on our human nature to be competitive with one another. You may not be interested at all in someone in “real life”, but make him your one and only focus and pin 25 or more other women with the same focus, you are going to want to “win” his attention.

The mind game must be crazy. I am sure half of the women from this past season may think Brad is attractive, but after having a conversation with him, would not be the least bit interested. I am sorry, he is very cute, but the second he opens up his mouth, I am annoyed. I have tried to pin point what exactly annoys me for two seasons now. It’s not his accent, I think it’s the way he forms his sentences, he just sounds so juvenile or something. I am still trying to figure out exactly what it is.

The Bachelor also follows the “Real World” winning formula of taking away television, cell phones, iPod’s, ect, and putting all these beautiful people in a house together with unlimited amounts alcohol. I guess how could they not get “good television”, it’s pure genius.

The only season I was completely thrilled for was Jillian’s. Reid Rosenthal, from Jillian’s season is a longtime friend of ours and I had talked to him a bunch when he was even just debating going on the show. That season was the most fun because all my high school girls got together every Monday night as we cheered Reid on, meanwhile going out with him that summer and trying to pry the secrets of the show out of him.

Before Jillian’s season and since, I usually watch either by myself or with a friend, but the last few seasons The Bachelor has taken over a whole new life since I have been on Twitter. Now I follow along with one of my favorite author’s Jennifer Weiner while she “live-tweets” about the Bachelor. It makes every Monday night like a “girls-night-in”. Jennifer even makes into a drinking game where you have to drink when someone says “they are there for the right reasons”, when Brad has his shirt off, or when Brad is talking to his therapist.

Follow along with the hilarious commentary on Monday nights ~

Follow on Twitter: @jenniferweiner & @Possessionista is also hysterical!

Brad’s Second Chance at Love

March 17, 2011

We watched Monday night as Brad Womack made a second attempt at finding a wife by choosing between single mom Emily Maynard and divorcee Chantal O’Brien. This was Brad’s second season as the Bachelor. The first season he was on he did not choose anyone and received a huge amount of backlash because of it. I still don’t understand this. If out of 25-30 women, he could not find someone he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, in the words of Fred Armisen as Joy Behar, “so what, who cares”. I didn’t see the harm in it, and actually I thought that was the highlight of that season. Brad not choosing either girl showed a change in the predictability of the show. It showed it didn’t matter who got out of the limo first, or who was wearing a white dress… they both could be sent packing. I thought it was a good ending, but then, Brad decided to come back again.

At the end of the finale on Monday, Emily and Brad looked like an ecstatic newly engaged couple. Except that was not the end… we still had “After the Final Rose”, airing immediately after the Bachelor finale, although filmed three months later in actual time. Brad and Emily explained that since the finale they have broken up, gotten back together, and had a bunch of fights (almost every Monday night) in between. They were not living together and not planning a wedding. Emily even came out and wasn’t wearing the ring, (Brad ended up giving it to her later in the show, mumbling something about getting it resized and now this moment meant more putting it on her finger…hmmm… whatever).

I have to say I loved Emily over the entire season and I loved her even more after the “After the Final Rose”. Emily is not this sweet as pie southern belle, she has flair and fire, she is tough and I love it! I think that is why Brad is fighting so hard to keep her now. I also have to fully respect that she is a mom first. She may only be 24 years old, but Emily is wise beyond her years and has a 5 year old daughter to worry about. She is not just dating Brad, she is not just making sure he will make a good boyfriend, or even husband, she is looking for him to be a good role model and father figure to her daughter. She is very tough on Brad and I don’t blame her one bit. I loved Emily’s attitude throughout the entire show. I think the Bachelor is built on these women trying to prove they are right for Brad, but when you are a mom, like in Emily’s case, (or even Jason’s season, as a Dad) you are more concerned with who will be good for your children, so the tables somewhat turn because Brad needs to prove he is good for Emily and her daughter Ricki.

So as one season has now ended, we are forced to look to the next. Monday night on Jimmy Kimmel, Ashley Herbert (the third runner up) revealed what a lot of us were hoping for, that she would be the next Bachelorette.

Being from Philly I have to say I was disappointed when they did her hometown date and I was so excited to see the Philadelphia area on the show again, and she ends up in her hometown in Maine. Ashley is actually a dental student at the University of Pennsylvania (fourth year grad student, way to go Ash!); she said she will be returning in the fall. Ashley also told Jimmy she had only been on about five dates in three years, so she will definitely be making up for some lost time. I am already excited for May, where I will be cursing the show and loving every second of it.

American Idol Top 12 Male Contests: Who’s YOUR Favorite?

March 3, 2011

We are finally on the big stage! The Top 12 male contestants of Season 10 performed live for the first time last night. This season the stakes are even higher for this first performance, Thursday night they will make cuts down to the top five guys chosen by the voters, and then the last 7 guys will get a second chance to perform for the judges’ wild card pick.

(The Top 12 female contestants perform tonight at 8pm/EST on Fox)
I thought there were a few guys who clearly stood out from the pack. First being a calmer Jacob Lusk, my family seemed as touched by his performance as the judges. I got a text right away from my step-mother saying he made her cry and she also thought the same as J.Lo, that he sounded just like Luther Vandross. Steven Tyler said his rendition of “A House is Not a Home” was “divine intervention”. Also Jacob, loved the suit!
Scotty McCreery, (although I am not a huge fan of country, even though my Dad is trying to get me to be) there is something about his voice that is so unique, so interesting, I could listen to him over and over again. He sang “Letters from Home”, a John Michael Montgomery song that could have not been a better choice. If we have learned one thing in the last nine seasons of Idol, it is that song selection can make or break you, and Scotty’s song will definitely help to make him the artist he wants to be. J.Lo told him it’s what he was born to do, and I have to agree.
Unlike Jordan Dorsey’s choice of Usher’s “OMG”, I am left to ask “Why?? Jordan, why??” I don’t remember seeing much of him during the Hollywood weeks and while I would trust that he can sing, we weren’t given any indication of that with last night’s performance. Even Jennifer asked him if this was the kind of artist he wanted to be and he told her straight out “No”, so then why?? Why pick “OMG”, that song shouldn’t have even been allowed on the Idol Stage, “OMG” should be left for my gym mix or to hear at a club, not ever on American Idol.
James Durbin took the stage and sang Judas Priest’s “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’”, another example of excellent song selection that made Steven yell “That was f***** crazy good!” (Also, the first time a Judas Priest song has been attempted on the Idol stage). I loved watching him through his first audition; they showed his background story about how he struggles with being autistic. They showed B roll of his wife, his son, and how his wife writes affirmations on Post-It’s through out their home. Although James has a touching story, he is also an incredible singer who showed significant control last night (even the scream and jump at the end were fitting). I also think he is a great role model for children living with autism to watch him and see what he can accomplish… we are rooting for you James!
Last night Casey Abrams didn’t have any large, unique instruments with him, and he didn’t need them. He sang “I Put a Spell on You” and clearly stood out and put a spell on me. I think it is his ‘confident with a touch of modesty’ personality that has me becoming a Casey fan.
I also have to say I really enjoyed Paul McDonald’s version of Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May”. I didn’t notice him until the end of Hollywood week, (I think I was in my little Chris Medina/Jaycee bubble), but this guy can sing. I love his soft raspy voice, and I also happen to love his smile.
I do have to admit though, last night for the first time all season, I really missed Simon. The judges have been great so far, critical, funny, entertaining, but last night I was waiting to hear the things we were all thinking but could never say… and I didn’t. I wanted to hear those remarks were I thought “Ouch! But SO true!” I am hoping the judges were just being nice on the first night and that this changes as the season progresses.

It’s OSCAR time!!

February 17, 2011

It’s Oscar time, it’s Oscar time… YAY it’s Oscar time… my favorite time of year!

Every year I get so excited for the Oscars, I really get into seeing all the films and making my predictions for the winners. Starting in high school I used to wake up early, watch them announce the nominations and then spend the next month preparing for the big night. I always try to see as many of the nominated films as I can. The last couple years, since having children, this has become more difficult, but I still make a decent attempt (and now my husband does too). Starting a couple years ago, we started the tradition where we have a few friends over, we make our ballots, we make our predictions, and best of all ~ we make bets. It always helps to keep you entertained when you bet on something, I heard this little tip with the Super Bowl and it definitely keeps the show interesting when they are doing some of the less exciting awards.
So make sure you tune into the Oscars next Sunday night, Feb 27th on ABC at 8pm, Red Carpet starting at 7pm.
Out of all the nominees, Toy Story 3 is the film most children and families are excited for. This latest Pixar film that was a huge hit last summer and is the highest-grossing animated film of all time! Which is even more amazing since this is especially rare for a sequel or a trilogy. B and I finally got around to watching it a couple days ago (he just recently became a HUGE Toy Story fan and hasn’t let go of his Buzz Lightyear since we saw the movie) and I have to say it lived up to all my expectations. The Toy Story movies, for me, have been impossible not to love. They have a perfect combination of heart, humor, and action. I think this last goodbye is the best yet.
Just in case if you happen to be one of the few who haven’t seen the movie (like I was), I won’t give anything away. When we last left our favorite toys, they had accepted the fact that Andy would out grow them, but that they would stick with him for as long as he needed them. Toy Story 3 shows Andy as he is now packing and leaving for college. Toy Story touches us with a coming of age story that deals with children leaving home and leaving childish things behind. This really hits home to anyone who has children, no matter how young. I know this time will come and everyone tells me how fast the time goes. The story is not only touching and insightful, it is hilarious at times. You will laugh and you will cry (I know grown men who cried during the last 15 minutes) and one thing is for sure, you will love this movie.
