How to Scrapbook Digitally: Tip #5

November 21, 2010

Add Quotes and Text
Using the sites given in the last tip, you will find lots of quotes or word art to add to your story.

ScrapGirls

Designer Digitals

Scrapbook Elements

Digital Scrapbook Place

Digital Scrapbook Pages

Use poems or lyrics to songs throughout the pages. Use a special card that has a really nice written thought to add to a page or several layouts.

Add a story about the pictures and include things like: Date, Place, Who is in the picture?, What was going on?, What were they thinking or saying? (This adds a lot of flavor to the story behind the picture!)

How to Scrapbook Digitally: Tip #4

November 6, 2010

Add Digital Papers and Embellishments

This is the best part of digital scrapbooking. You only need to buy your papers once. Unlike, traditional scrapping you need to keep re-buying the paper. Listed below are five sites to find lots of digital papers to use with any digital scrapbooking software:

Designer Digitals

A Few Housekeeping Tips:

They always run sales like Thirfty Thursdays, Freaky Fridays (month of October), or Repeat Mondays (after the first of the year). But one of the best times to find great deals is the weekend after Thanksgiving! Most of the sites have some crazy sales. Designer Digitals is the only one that doesn’t have that many sales so when you see a sale for 25-40% off grab it! The other sites will go as high as 75%.

Here’s another tip within a tip: Bookmark what you like and if the site has a wish list use it. Then wait for the sales. I use Diigo to bookmark pages of sites and use tags like the name of the site or a word that describes the item I am interested in like “quotes, sports, friends…” When you receive an email telling you a particular site is having a sale go look at your wishlist and see if any of your items are on sale. If the site doesn’t have a Wish List, check your Bookmarks.

A Few Ideas For Layouts
Many of your layouts will have a theme so use the themed papers and embellishments that come in the kits to create your story. There is really no right or wrong way to use the papers. The more you scrap the more creative you will get with your papers. You will find yourself getting to know your papers, embellishments, and quotes so well you will start mixing them together and coming with some really cool and amazing layouts!

When you have a picture that carries a lot of emotion make it bigger then the rest and blend it into the background with no frame. Put the other pictures in smaller frames.

Mix black and whites with color. Personally, I love this look. I like to place the black and white picture in a frame then place the color pictures along side of the frame but smaller. The emphasis is on the black and white photo.

How to Scrapbook Digitally Tip #2: Scanning

October 8, 2010

Tip #2 Scanning Non Digital Pictures or Documents

If your looking for a new scanner for this project then find one that has these features:

1. Auto Detect Multiple Documents which scans the entire 11 x 8.5 area then breaks up the images into individual jpg files. This is very useful when scanning lots of pictures. It will capture each photo and save it as its own jpg file.

If you have a program like Photoshop Elements but don’t have a scanner with the Auto Detect Multiple Documents, you can actually bring the image into Photoshop Elements and use the Divide Scan Photos feature to break apart your scanned images.

2. Resolution should be 300 digital pixels per inch (dpi) or higher. You need 300 dpi to print. This is pretty standard. You don’t need 1200 dpi. It will take a very long time for the scanner to scan the image. I usually scan images in at 600 dpi to give me extra pixels to work with in the event I need to do some additional editing to the photo later.

3. Dust and Scratches. This is such an important feature when printing a book using scanned photos. You will not see the white dust or scratches on your photos but they are there, unfortunately. Knowing ahead of time that they exist makes the solution easy.

Find a scanner that has a Dust and Scratch removal feature. There are at least three settings: Low, Medium, High. Depending on how old the photos are and how protected they were will determine which setting to use.

I use Medium on my CanoScan scanner for pictures that are one generation old. If they are two generations old or more, then I use the highest setting. In additional to that I also use the filter Dust and Scratches in Photoshop after scanning.

By scanning the pictures in the order in which they were organized will help placing them in their folders after scanning.
