Rescued Croc arrives at Elmwood Park Zoo

August 3, 2010

The Elmwood Park Zoo has a new arrival….a 6.5 ft. American crocodile weighing 64 lbs. The croc is one of over 230 animals that were confiscated by officials in Milwaukee, WI. The animals were discovered by law enforcement officials in May at a warehouse identified as the Cullen Vivarium Wildlife Conservancy. The rescue team, which included members of the Milwaukee Animal Control and the Racine Zoo, reported that many of the animals were found living in their own filth.

Since the animals were discovered the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the national accrediting body for zoos and aquariums, has been searching for “reputable, qualified facilities that can provide long-term care” for the rescued animals. Earlier this month, Elmwood Park Zoo was tapped to manage the care of one of the American crocodiles that were rescued. Two of the zoo’s keepers returned this morning from Milwaukee with the animal.

“We are proud to participate in this important rescue and conservation effort”, stated Dave Wood, Elmwood Park Zoo’s General Curator. “We regret the circumstances in which these animals were discovered and look forward to helping to nurse the croc back to health so it can enjoy a long and healthy life here at the Elmwood Park Zoo.”

The American crocodile is cousin to the American alligator. It is distinguishable by its longer, thinner snout, its lighter color, and two long teeth on the lower jaw that are visible when its mouth is closed. The adult crocodile can range from 7 to 15 feet long and weigh between 150 to 450 pounds. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, fish, crabs, insects, snails, frogs, and occasionally carrion. The American crocodile can be found throughout parts of North, Central, and South America. A small, remnant population lives in southern Florida. Their habitat of choice is the fresh or brackish water of river estuaries, coastal lagoons, and mangrove swamps.

What’s New At Elmwood Park Zoo?

July 11, 2009

Looking for something new and exciting? Well, The Elmwood Park Zoo has some new animal exhibits!

Visitors were treated to two new attractions when they entered the Zoo on June 26th, both of them at Bayou Building. The following is from zoo’s press release regarding the new attraction:

Just after the gates opened, our two howler monkeys, Mojo and Amy Lou, were given access to their new outdoor enclosure. For the past week, the pair had been offered food in the tunnel that connects to their indoor exhibit. This morning, the outer door was opened just before the crowds began to gather and Mojo wasted no time investigating his new domain. Amy Lou was a bit more skeptical about the terra incognita, but it was only a matter of minutes for her to join in the exploration. Our guests looked on with great interest and endless questions about the event.

Meanwhile, other guests were attracted to the many yellow, gold, blue and green frogs that were hopping around our two new Jungle Jewels habitats inside the Bayou. There’s quite a size difference between howler monkeys and tree frogs, but no discernible difference in the level of visitor interest for each. We may need to stock up on Windex this summer, just to clean the smudges from people pressing their faces up against the glass to get a closer look at the frogs.
