How much is too much?

May 31, 2010

I want to enroll my kids in all kinds of lessons. My oldest daughter does ballet at school, but they also offer gymnastics, Chinese, French and piano. I have a temptation to enroll her in all of them. This spring, I was looking into enrolling her into soccer, t-ball, tennis and golf – all in the same month!

I know all about over-scheduling children – well – I read all about over-scheduling children. I wonder what kind of life a kid who runs from lacrosse practice to language lessons to violin practice and then back home for an evening of homework really has. Then I look at my kids and wonder how they’ll figure out what they want to do if they don’t have experience with all kinds of different things?

How will they figure out if they want to play golf or tennis if they don’t try both. What about piano? Violin? Which language do they like more: French, Italian, Chinese? How will I know which one makes the most sense? Is the best option?

I’ve learned about how to figure out which program is the best, but what about which choice to make? Can someone help me with that?
