Freedom Playground-Grand Opening

October 13, 2010

For those of you that don’t live in Delaware County you may not of heard of Freedom Playground, but I hope after reading this you make the journey whether it’s near or far, so you can see for yourself what an amazing place we have here for children of ALL abilities.

I was fortunate enough to have been been a part of build week with some amazing people. The committee members have spent time, money, sweat and tears to make this happen. It wasn’t just about build week, it was all the planning before and then even after build the playground stood unfinished because they needed the most important aspect of a 100% handicap accessible playground…the ground cover! You may think…why don’t they just put wood chips or gravel? If they did that it wouldn’t be a 100% accessible playground for all children. The special ground cover that costs over $100,000 needs to be there so children with wheel chairs and walkers can easily move around.

Freedom Playground is a state of the art, custom‐built play structure which caters to children of all abilities and needs. Made primarily from composite lumber, it gives ALL children 100% accessibility to all areas of the play structure. A project that started in November 2008 has come to fulfillment with the help of community volunteers and generous donors; the committee has raised over $370,000.00. I think that is truly amazing and makes me smile to think that if you want something bad enough..you WILL get the job done!

Under the guidance of the Ithaca, NY architectural firm, Leathers & Associates, Freedom Playground was built in a barn‐raising style build from April 19‐25, 2010 with the help of over 2,000 community volunteers. Freedom Playground will be owned by the township and open and free to the public 365 days a year, from dawn to dusk. All the hard work is now paying off for the volunteers and their families…there is a date set for a
