Sugartown Strawberries (Malvern) is excited to announce the First Family Fun Day on the farm!

May 4, 2013

Sugartown Strawberries is excited to announce the first Family Fun Day on the farm! The fun-filled, educational event will be held on Saturday, May 11th from 2PM-4PM. Activities will include a hayride tour of the farm, an interactive story, and an enlightening talk from the beekeeper! Children will also get to plant and take home their own potted sunflower seed and meet the new mascot!

Sugartown Strawberries, located at 650 Sugartown Road in Malvern, is
a 230 acre working farm in Chester County that has been in the family since 1896! The farm has 100 acres of tillable land and is registered as a Natural Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. In addition to asparagus and strawberries in the spring, they specialize in growing sweet corn, vegetables, and sunflowers in the summer. Throughout the year they host over 5,000 school children for educational farm tours. In the fall schools and local families enjoy visiting us for Pick Your Own Pumpkins, hayrides, and mazes!

The beekeeper, Greg Aubel, is a member of the Chester County Beekeepers Association and is in his 3rd year of beekeeping. His interest in honeybees was sparked by a fascinating observation hive in an ice cream shop! After rescuing his first honeybees from an abandoned house, Greg brought them to Sugartown Strawberries, they are grateful to have his bees on the farm as they are critical in pollinating crops and serve the community by providing raw, local honey!

The cost of the event is $5.00/child or $10.00/family. To reserve your spot, please call Lisa at 610.613.0525, or by email via lisa@sugartownstrawberries.com. (Don’t forget to mention Chesco Moms)

This Week at The West Chester Growers Market – November 6th

November 5, 2010

How is it November already? I just snuck a peek at my calendar, and can you believe we have just slightly less than 3 weeks until Thanksgiving? The holidays are closing in!

The Growers Market is still going strong, with plenty of wares to peruse. Produce is slowing down, but many of the winter vegetables and apples will still be around for a while. We are lucky to have a few vendors with greenhouses, which means some produce at our Winter Markets (which start in December). Yum! One of the items with plenty to spare is squash/pumpkins. I took this picture last weekend. It looks so picture perfect…::CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING::

National Farmers Market Week – August 1st – 7th

July 30, 2010

Did you know that August 1-7 is National Farmers’ Market Week? If you haven’t been to a farmers’ market yet this summer, this coming week is the week to do it.

This time of year, there’s no reason to buy produce that’s been shipped from Timbuktu. These days the farm stands in our area are filled to overflowing with juicy ruby-red tomatoes, luscious fuzzy peaches, scrumptious green beans and colorful rainbow chard. We’ve been buying local produce all summer, and the flavor is out of this world. Just yesterday, my 7-year-old daughter declared passionately, “Mom! I like fruit better than candy!

Buying fresh and local stimulates our local economy and promotes goodwill within the community. You might even see someone you know! And there’s nothing quite like looking into the eyes of the person who produces your food and knowing exactly where it comes from and how it is grown.

If you’re not sure where to find a farmers’ market, check out this list of area farmers’ markets on Eat Local Philly. Or you can search by county on the site as well.

And if your favorite farmers’ market is not listed on the site, please let us know!

Jo-Lynne is the founder of Eat Local Philly. When she’s not seeking out new sources for local foods, she is probably elbow-deep in bread dough or musing on weighty topics such as fashion and reality TV on her personal blog, Musings of a Housewife. Fabulously Fun and FREE Field Trip….Springton Manor

January 18, 2010
Springton Manor Farm
860 Springton Road, Glenmoore, PA 19343
610-942-2450
(Located 5 miles west of Downingtown off Route 322)

Springton Manor is part of the Chester County Parks and Recreation Department . The property was initially part of a William Penn Manor and has been in agricultural use since the early 1700’s. On this 300 acre demonstration farm, you can meet the animals and tour the beautiful grounds.

Visiting hours for the animals are every day, from 10:00am to 3:00PM in Springton Manor Farm’s Great Barn. Springton Manor is free to visit, stroller and toddler friendly. One of my children’s favorite things to do is run around the barn and collect stamps on their “barn passports”. What is a “barn passport?”. A piece of paper designed to look like a passport. Each animal in the barn has a stamping station that when you visit the animal you stop by the stamping station and stamp your passport….all free and fabulously fun!

First time visiting… when you turn into the park you will drive down a long driveway and you will see the Manor House on your right, continue along the driveway passing the Manor House and follow the driveway to the lower parking lot. Parking in the lower lot is the easiest access to the barn.

In the summer parking at the Manor/ Carraige house is the easiet access to the butterfly house and carraige house.

Restrooms are located at the carraige house (next to Manor House).

If you know of a faboulsly fun and FREE place to field trip.. please let us know.
