Keep Halloween Safe for the Whole Family

October 31, 2010

American Association of Poison Control Centers: Keep Halloween Safe for the Whole Family

Halloween is full of both manufactured and legitimate scares: It’s the good kind of scary for kids, who love dressing up as something spooky, but can be the bad kind of scary for parents, who worry about the dangers of accepting goodies from strangers as well as the inevitable sugar high that trick-or-treating brings. But some of the scariest parts of Halloween are the ones parents don’t think of.

With that in mind, the American Association of Poison Control Centers offers a few tips aimed at making the Halloween a little less frightening for parents:

• Carry a flashlight after the sun goes down, and make sure excited trick-or-treaters don’t inadvertently wander in the way of passing cars.
• Stay in local and familiar neighborhoods. Send an adult with young children.
• Avoid barking dogs or other upset animals.
• Put trick-or-treaters in brightly colored costumes made of flame-resistant materials. Add some reflective tape on trick or treat bags to make sure your child is visible after it gets dark.
• Keep candle-lit Jack-o-Lanterns off doorsteps and out of the way of foot traffic. Fire hazards could be a danger to trick-or-treaters dealing with long or cumbersome costumes.
• If your child uses makeup rather than a mask, keep an eye out for possible skin irritation, including a rash or itching. If your child develops a rash, remove the makeup immediately and wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water. Some kids may get creative with make-up substitutes and use shoe polish, paints or other household products. Shoe polish, inks, or felt tipped markers may contain petroleum, solvents or aniline dyes that can irritate skin and be harmful if ingested. Also be careful with glitter. Glitter in the eye as a consequence of being applied to eyes, face or even hair can result in injury to the eye.
• Inspect all treats before the kids eat them. Eat only treats in original and unopened wrappers. If wrappers are faded, have holes, tears or signs of rewrapping, throw them away. Throw away all unwrapped candy or treats.
• Check fruits and homemade goodies for foreign objects that may have been inserted or injected, including pins, metal needles or razor blades. Cut fruit into several sections to check for foreign objects.
• Be wary of dry ice. While dry ice is a great special effect for a party, keep small pieces of it out of individual drink glasses. Dry ice can cause frostbite if it comes in contact with the skin or mouth.
• Glow sticks contain dibutyl phthalate and can be an irritant to eyes on splash contact and
sometimes skin. Parents may be alarmed at the neon glow of their child’s teeth or skin, but rest
assured that a taste amount is non-toxic.
• Not all strange-looking candy is dangerous. Some are simple “candy manufacturing boo-boos.”
Before you panic, consider that white flecks could be starch and glassy pieces could be crystallized sugar. But if in doubt, toss it out – there is more than likely a ton more candy left to enjoy.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers supports the nation’s 60 poison controlcenters in their efforts to keep trick-or-treaters of all ages safe every day of the year. Poison centers offer free and confidential services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For questions about poisons on Halloween and any other day of the year, call your local poison control center at 1 (800) 222-1222.

Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee – Review and Giveaway

October 30, 2010

Coffee. As a college student, I was probably one of the few who did NOT drink it all the time. My beverage of choice was soda or iced tea. But I loved the smell. I just never thought I would like it.

Fast forward a good twelve years or so. I became a mom. I found myself being up ridiculously late hours, many nights in a row, and then up so early that I was able to become the neighborhood watch, keeping unofficial track of my neighbors’ comings and goings, seeing who was an early bird to work and who was a straggler (many times the straggler was actually my own husband, as he was part of the late night crew for feedings!)

How did I get through those crazy days and nights? Thanks in large part to my new friend – coffee! For something that I shunned much of my early adult life, I now found that I could not start a day without it. Add another child to the mix about a year later, and well, coffee and I have been inseparable!

So when I recently got the opportunity to satisfy my coffee cravings and sample some at home flavors from Dunkin’ Donuts (which both my children were able to identify by sight before 2 years of age, thanks to their love of munchkins and mine for coffee), I jumped at the chance.

As part of an at home Dunkin’ Donuts tour with The Mom Bloggers Club, I received a package of three delicious coffee flavors to sample: Hazelnut, French Vanilla and Cinnamon Spice. I knew that if the coffee tasted as good as the package it came in was smelling, that we would be in business!

As I typically don’t drink straight “old school” coffee the way my dear dad does, these flavored coffees were right up my alley. The first one we tried (I enlisted my husband to also sample the flavors) was the French Vanilla. It was excellent – I have often tried iced French Vanilla coffee when my husband would get one while out, but have to say that this was a nice surprise. The smell of vanilla is something I love from being a kid and baking with my mom, so when you put that together with good coffee and serve it hot, well, for me it’s a home run!

The second flavor we sampled was the Cinnamon Spice. My first reaction was that drinking this was like consuming a cinnamon roll in liquid form! It smelled so good while brewing (imagine your favorite cinnamon scented holiday candle burning in the kitchen) and it tasted just as good. Even my husband who is more a purist when it comes to coffee drinking, enjoyed the taste of this coffee, which I think will now become a staple in our kitchen.

The final flavor we brewed up to taste was the Hazelnut. Now, as anyone who knows me could tell you, I love hazelnut flavored candy, and even tried to dabble in doctoring up my husband’s super strong regular coffee with some hazelnut syrup to make it taste “better” – but that ended up in the trash. So both of us were then pleasantly surprised with the Dunkin’ Donuts Hazelnut flavored coffee. It was not overpowering to the point that you could not taste the actual coffee, and my husband said it tasted very similar to what you would get at the actual Dunkin’ Donuts store.

All in all, we really enjoyed the ability to have the Dunkin’ Donuts experience at home, especially these flavored varieties – and now I want to give you the opportunity to win a bag of your own to brew at home.

WIN IT!

Warm Up with These Tasty Treats on Halloween

October 29, 2010

The weather was beautiful all week, but it is turning chillier this weekend. Just in time for Halloween! I wanted to share with you two recipes to warm you up on Halloween, that I am loving this fall. The first, a Pumpkin Fondue would be a great appetizer to serve pre-trick or treating. Being that Halloween falls on a Sunday this year it is a great opportunity to have some neighbors over before you all head out and hit the candy. When you get home, you can kick back, relax and warm up with a nice Hot Apple Toddy. A nice fall twist on an old favorite. Both couldn’t be easier or more tasty!

If you already have a favorite fondue recipe, go ahead and make that, stuff it in the pumpkin and bake it. If not, I am including one for you.

Recipe: Pumpkin Fondue

  • 1 small Pumpkin – about 3 lbs.
  • 5 oz. Gruyere Cheese – shredded
  • 5 oz. Emmental Cheese – shredded
  • 1 tbs All Purpose Flour
  • 8 oz. White Wine
  • 1 Garlic Clove – minced
  • 1 tbs Kirsch (Cherry Brandy)
  • Freshly Grated Nutmeg – to taste
  • Freshly Ground Black Pepper – to taste
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cut off the top of the pumpkin, scoop out seeds and clean out the stringy bits.
  3. Place the pumpkin on an oiled baking sheet and lightly brush the outside with oil.
  4. In a saucepan, gently heat the cheeses, flour and wine over medium-low heat until the cheese is melted.
  5. Add in the kirsch, garlic and nutmeg. Season with pepper. Stir until the sauce is smooth.
  6. Fill fondue in the pumpkin.
  7. Place the pumpkin top back on and bake in the oven for one hour to one and a half hours.
  8. Serve with cubes of french bread and apples.

Recipe: Hot Apple Toddy

  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • 1 tbs Honey
  • 1 slice of Lemon
  • 6 oz Apple Cider
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  1. Gently heat the apple cider in saucepan with the cinnamon stick until it simmers.
  2. While the cider is heating, place honey, bourbon and lemon slice in the bottom of a mug.
  3. Pour in heated cider and stir to combine.
  4. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and serve. This makes one serving.
