Good Night Our World Collection- Great books for kids!

July 23, 2010

My daughter received Good Night Philadelphia
as a Christmas gift a few years ago and it is one of her favorite books. Good Night Philadelphia is one of the books in the Good Night Our World Board Books Collection by Adam Gamble and Cooper Kelly.

The book teaches little ones about historic Philadelphia and introduces them to the Liberty Bell, the Betsey Ross House and the Constitution Center. The book also teaches about contemporary culture: rivers, architecture, museums, zoo, markets, even “cheese steaks.”

This is a fun and educational read for both kids and parents.

I love the series so much that we have started to collect the books featuring other cities. Before my daughters first trip to New York City, I wanted her to get excited about her first trip to NYC so I purchased Good Night New York City. The book taught her all about the NYFD, The Brooklyn Bridge, Broadway and The Empire State Building. While we were walking around the city she must have asked me a dozen times if every tall building we passed was The Empire State Building. When we finally got to The Empire State Building she looked up at it in amazement – she had seen it in her book, but seeing live and in person left her smiling and speechless.

Great Souvenir
I have taken a few kids free trips over the years and always try and pop into a book store and
see if the have the Good Night Our World book for the city that I visited. This is a fun way for me to share my travel experience with my kids. So far I have brought back Good Night Boston, Good Night North Carolina and Good Night Arizona.

This summer we have also sent a few Good Night Philadelphia Book care packages along with Herr’s chips and Tasty Cakes to friends around the country to share our city with them. In turn they have sent us the book for their state/city. My daughter loves to get mail and getting a book care package in the mail just about puts her over the moon. This summer we have received books from Florida, New Jersey, Maryland, Vermont and are expecting Texas and California any day now.

When a new book arrives my kids and I read it cover to cover (a few times) and then my daughter immediately begins to plan a trip to visit the friend that sent it along with a detailed itinerary of the landmarks she wants to see when she visits. I enjoy this and I love that she is excited about geography….without even knowing it.

We really enjoy the Good Night Our World Collection and hope you will too!

We visited Franklin Square Park yesterday (6th & Race at the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge). One of my VP’s sisters worked on the project and we’ve wanted to go now for at least a year. Anyway, it’s the best city park for kids and adults by far. Mini golf, enclosed playgroup with a great foam base for both younger and older sets, carousel, a luncheon spot (Square Burger–a Steven Starr restaurant), and the Living Flame Memorial dedicated to the city’s fallen policemen and firefighters.

If you’re looking for a terrific hang out for a while during your visit to Center City, be sure to check it out! http://www.historicphiladelphia.org/day/franklin-square/
