Fishing with Kids (tips to make it fun for all)

July 30, 2011
Hi I’m Andrea (also known as Rofomom). I’m a stay at home mother of 3 living in Royersford!
On my blog, REAL life in Rofo, I connect with my community by sharing about healthy living, parenting and daily life.
Last May I completed my first Half-marathon and plan to complete my first full marathon in November!
This summer my family has been busy doing it all. One of the things we enjoy doing as a family is going fishing. It is a relatively inexpensive hobby and in this area there are several different fishing holes to try without driving very far.
My 6 year old, Kyle, waiting for a fish to bite!

Over the years, my husband and I have found that WE enjoy fishing a lot more when our children have something to hold their attention as well! At the ages of 2,6 and 9, they aren’t as patient as we would like them to be when it comes to casting the line and waiting for a fish to bite!

Here are a few ideas to help pass the time while parents AND kids enjoy this fun sport:
Bring a BUCKET – add water to this and you have some instant fun, especially once you catch something. The children enjoy watching the fish swim around in the bucket and observing the different characteristics of each fish. They may even be courageous enough to touch one! We always release what we catch and the kids enjoy pouring the fish back when we are ready to go home.
A Little Frog

Some BIG Tadpoles

My 2 year old is HOLDING a fish! My 6 year old is trying to get one, too!
My 9 year old is reading a book!

Bring a NET (or 2!) – One with a shorter handle and one with a long handle (if possible). When the kids get bored of casting and reeling in their lines, they have fun catching frogs, tadpoles, and smaller fish with their nets. (This is another reason the BUCKET is useful!)
We used duct tape and a broom handle to extend the handle for one of our nets!
SWIM SHOES or( water shoes) – footwear is important. We find that “croc-style” shoes or standard swimming shoes are nice to have along water’s edge. It makes exploring so much more fun!
A POLE for Everyone – even our little guy, Andrew needed to have his own pole. He was watching everyone else cast their line and wanted to cast his, too! This year we made him a pole from a stick, fishing line, bobber, and a hook (made from a swivel). He needed something we could add “bait” to.
Swivels
CANNED CORN – we have found this to be an excellent bait! It’s easy to store, cheap and the children are very comfortable handling it. Give it a try! We caught every fish in this post with canned corn!
We divide the corn into baggies and give everyone their own bag.
A Trout, 3 Catfish and a Sunny!
I hope you’ve enjoyed these ideas and that your next “family” fishing adventure is a fun one for all!
Happy Fishing!

"Access/ABILITY" at The Please Touch Museum

March 2, 2011

Identifying how things are different is something children learn very early in life. Parents ask their children questions like, “Which shape is bigger? Which number is greater? What’s the difference between the two pictures?” Equally important, if not more so, is teaching kids to see how things, situations and people are similar, and the Access/ABILITY exhibit recently added to the Please Touch Museum is doing just that.

The Access/ABILITY exhibit was created by Boston’s Children Museum in 2004 and has traveled to museums around the country.

“This important exhibit aims to change attitudes, dispel myths, fears and stereotypes and increase awareness of people living with disabilities by acknowledging differences while highlighting similarities,” said Laura Foster, president and CEO of the Please Touch Museum. “Access/ABILITY provides an arena in which children can safely ask questions and receive open and honest answers about what it’s like to live with a physical or learning disability.”

The Access/ABILITY exhibit, designed for children ages 5 through 12, echoes the museum’s philosophy of “learning through play” with 1,200 square feet of exploration. Kids who enter the exhibit are anxious to try out several hands-on activities.

Susan Weldon, who visited the Please Touch Museum with three of her younger grandchildren, said, “Kids are learning how to do things they’ve never done before. This generation is much more accepting of differences.”

Some of the things kids can experience at the Access/ABILITY exhibit are how it feels to write if you have dyslexia, how to use American Sign Language and Braille to communicate, how buttons, zippers and door handle shapes affect the routine tasks of getting dressed and opening doors, how it feels to power a bicycle with one’s hands, how one’s sense of touch helps a person get around and learn about his or her surroundings, how to do everyday tasks while using a wheelchair and how people are different types of learners — visual, auditory, etc.

“I think the wheelchair course is the most popular in the exhibit,” said Raquel Rivera, a Please Touch Museum employee since 2008. “Many children do surprisingly well, especially 6- to 10-year-olds.”

The Access/ABILITY exhibit teaches children that everyone experiences life in unique ways and excels in different areas. Some people are better at understanding relationships and dealing with people, while others are better at understanding the environment and nature. Some people have great athletic and physical abilities, and others have tremendous artistic talents. Some people think logically and mathematically, whereas others have a way with words.

Tina Kleinguenther, a rehab nurse at Genesis Eldercare, took time to talk with her children during their recent visit to the exhibit. Since she cares for patients with prosthetics, she was able to share her knowledge with her kids as they learned how people with disabilities use remarkable devices for everything from daily tasks to winning competitions.

“It’s good for kids to have this experience and see that people can do anything they set their mind to,” Kleinguenther said.

Visit the Access/ABILITY exhibit with your kids and they will participate in fun, eye-opening activities that will teach them that there are many ways to reach the same goal and more than one road leads to happiness. It’s a wonderful opportunity for education, awareness and discussion.

The Please Touch Museum is located at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia. For more information, visit http://www.pleasetouchmuseum.org or call 215-581-3181. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Museum admission is $15 for adults and children ages 1 and older (children under 1 are free). The Access/ABILITY exhibit, open until April 24, is free with museum admission.

The Movers are Coming! The Imagination Movers.. That’s What I’m Talkin’ Bout’

February 22, 2011

What would happen if the Beastie Boys collaborated with Mr. Rogers?

The answer is found on the Imagination Movers’ three critically acclaimed indie CDs: “Calling All Movers,” “Good Ideas,” and “Eight Feet” and their first national release “Juice Box Heroes.” Oh and don’t forget they also have an award-winning, grass roots DVD “Stir It Up” to throw in the mix too.

Indeed, the Movers sing about things they know: messy rooms, healthy snacks, sibling rivalry and other topics that relate to being a little kid. Their musical style, however, would sound right at home on a weekly MTV countdown.

The Movers – Rich, Scott, Dave and Smitty — began in New Orleans in 2003 and now are fast-rising stars on the national kids music scene thanks to their combination of radio-friendly songs, kid-friendly themes and dynamic live shows. In concert, the Movers teach high-energy dances, play games with the audience and make music on their one-of-a-kind trashcan drumset. Kids and parents help perform new kids classics like “Shakable You,” “The Medicine Song,” “What’s in the Fridge?” and “I Want My Mommy (Time for Bed).”

The Movers are a big hit on national satellite radio and Radio Disney, where many of their songs remain in heavy rotation. They have also won a total of 14 national music awards and were named a “Parenting Pick” by Parenting Magazine as far back as May 2005. Even now, an ongoing tour of U.S. cities creates new Movers fans (affectionately known as “Gearheads”) in the wake of every show.

Based largely on the original concept created by the Movers themselves in 2003, Disney Channel debuted a new television series in 2008 featuring Rich, Scott, Dave and Smitty as blue-collar brainstormers working hard to solve “Idea Emergencies” in their Idea Warehouse, a clearinghouse of infinite inspirations. Through songs, stories and hijinks, Imagination Movers moves kids to exercise their bodies and brains.

Movers motto for everything in life is to “reach high, think big, work hard and have fun!” The Movers themselves are leading by example as they captivate new fans daily with their winning sound and style. ~ imaginationmovers.com/website/about_us.php
